Currently: With Erik Johanson of SEPTA

How do public utilities tell their stories and communicate their value to their customers?

“We really start with acknowledging that there’s areas where we are working on to get better.”

That’s Erik Johanson’s take, and as Senior Director of Budgets and Transformation at Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) he plays a critical role in telling the story of mass transit to the public in the greater Philadelphia area.

On the latest Currently, Johanson joined our own Rebecca Smith to talk about organization’s efforts to improve security and cleanliness on its trains and buses, the regional and statewide impact of public transit — and how the $200M budget that SEPTA is staring down could affect their daily lives.

Along the way they also talk about how SEPTA conveys 1.6 million people to work every day, has supported generational events like the Eagles Super Bowl parade and the Pope’s visit and how SEPTA stacks up against other major metropolitan transit authorities.

And as a lifelong Philadelphian, Erik ways in on the perpetual great debate — his take on the best cheesesteak in the city.
